What is hypnosis like? Will I lose control?

First of all, I don’t hypnotise you: You hypnotise yourself so you remain totally in control the whole time, going only as deep into a trance as you need to and as feels right for you. As a Cognitive Hypnotherapist I use the “every day nature of trance” as a short cut to your subconscious, that’s the trance you go into when you listen to music or remember what you did on your holiday or, indeed, when you relive your problem or issue. It is nothing at all like any stage hypnotism which you might have seen.

How many sessions will I need?

One of the many great things about Cognitive Hypnotherapy is that it is a brief therapy. There is no “usual” time limit – some clients may only see me three times, some want to check in with me every few months to ensure they are keeping on track. This is another strength of this therapy, I will tailor the treatment to fit the client and only work at a pace the client is comfortable with. And I am happy to have chats with you in between sessions, either by phone or email.

How long are the sessions?

I charge by the session, not by time, and so a session lasts as long as it takes. Not a very helpful answer but between 60 or 90 minutes is average. The first session is a gentle, getting to know you and how you “do” your problem or issue. I may give you a simple technique for you to take away. How subsequent sessions go depends completely on the client – we may go to the heart of the problem or we may work on other coping strategies. I’ll be checking back with you all the time about how you are doing, to get to the real nub of what is holding you back.

What is expected of me, as the client?

The way I work is very much in the model of a “therapeutic alliance”, that is to say, the client has to invest the time and effort for change to happen and to stick. Listening to any downloads I have prepared and having a go at any techniques I have taught you are just some ways for this to happen.

I make clear at the outset that we are in this together but I want YOU to reach the point where you can solve YOUR own problems.

I may create a download for you to listen to, to cement the changes that are happening. It will be specifically targeted to you and your issue. The more you listen to this, the more quickly your subconscious gets used to my voice and change can be quicker and more permanent. I’ve tried to make it as easy as I can, technologically speaking, for you to listen to this.
